The Kind of Day I Never Get Tired Of

READING

Five — ★★★★★

If you’re looking for a truly unputdownable read, may I direct your attention to Five, which releases tomorrow, May 5.

Five strangers board a train. One of them will be dead by the end of the ride.

That premise alone was enough to hook me, but what made this one so compelling was how quickly I became invested in each character. The story unfolds over the course of just a few minutes, yet we dive deep into every passenger’s past, secrets, and motivations.

By the end, you may find yourself rooting for certain characters to make it out alive—and perhaps not feeling too bad if others don’t.

Absolutely addictive. Five stars.

I loved this book so much that I immediately mailed my copy to a friend because I need to know what she thinks.

Will she love it? Will she hate it? Honestly, it could go either way.

The main character is deeply unlikable, which, for me, is often a selling point rather than a warning. If you enjoy a messy, morally questionable narrator, you’re in for a treat.

Think ballerina-meets-farmhouse trad wife energy with plenty of twists and just enough absurdity to keep things interesting.

It’s marketed as a thriller, though I’d call it more of a deliciously unsettling and wildly entertaining read.

A Good Person

I tore through this darkly funny novel.

The protagonist is a full-blown narcissist, and her observations, choices, and conversations are so awkward that I experienced secondhand embarrassment on nearly every page.

I laughed out loud more than once, mostly because I truly never knew what outrageous thing would come out of her mouth next.

If you enjoy your fiction sharp, uncomfortable, and very funny, this is a great one.

Heather

A novel about twin sisters who grew up in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey?

Say less.

This one is an automatic pre-order for me.

Our Perfect Storm

I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Carley Fortune’s latest, and I’m happy to report it delivered exactly what I wanted.

Friends-to-lovers, lots of chemistry, and the kind of story you’ll happily devour in a beach chair with a cocktail in hand.

If you’ve enjoyed her previous books, this one will be right up your alley.

MUSING

The Kind of Day I Never Get Tired Of

Philadelphia is one of my favorite cities for a solo day trip.

It has everything I love: walkable neighborhoods, beautiful old architecture, excellent bookstores, and some of the best vegan food I’ve had anywhere. Give me a comfortable pair of sneakers, a tote bag with room for books, and a dinner reservation, and I’m perfectly content.

Start with a Walk Through Old City

Begin your day with a stroll through Elfreth's Alley, the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in the United States.

It is charming, quiet, and one of those places that makes you stop and imagine the lives that have unfolded behind each brick façade. From there, wander the cobblestone streets of Old City and make your way toward Center City.

Bookstore Stops Worth Your Time

Philadelphia is a fantastic city for book lovers.

My favorites include:

  • The Book Trader for used books stacked floor to ceiling.

  • Barnes & Noble, a huge store where I always seem to leave with more than I intended.

  • Philly AIDS Thrift @ Giovanni’s room

  • Book Barn, worth the trip for the atmosphere alone.

Late Lunch and Cocktails

If you’re in town Thursday through Sunday, grab a late lunch around 3 PM at Bar Bombón.

On weekends, Fitz on 4th is another excellent option.

If you’re visiting any day of the week, Monster Vegan is a must. The atmosphere is dark and playful, the cocktails are outstanding, and the Hoagie-Tini is every bit as fun as it sounds. There is often a classic horror movie playing in the background, which somehow makes the experience even better.

Dinner at Charlie Was a Sinner

For dinner, make a reservation at Charlie Was a Sinner..

The room is moody and intimate, the cocktails are excellent, and the food feels indulgent and satisfying. It is one of those restaurants that manages to feel both special and comfortable.

Nightcap with a View

End the evening at SkyHigh.

The cocktails are expensive, but the sweeping city views make it worth it for a final drink.

If You Need a Cozy Break

After a bookstore haul, settle into The Wayward with a cocktail and an appetizer. It is one of my favorite places to sit with a new book and enjoy the simple pleasure of having nowhere else to be.

What to Pack for a Day Like This

  • Comfortablesneakers

  • A roomytote bag for books

  • A portable charger(I own this one, and it is great!)

  • A reservation for dinner

  • Plenty of room in your bag for spontaneous purchases

Final Thoughts

My ideal day in Philadelphia is simple: a long walk, a stack of books, an excellent vegan meal, and a good cocktail.

No strict itinerary. No rushing around. Just a thoughtfully spent day in one of the most enjoyable cities to explore on your own.
